Pace Layers
Pace Layers is Stewart Brand's model for understanding complex systems by separating them into parts that change at different speeds. In the original version, civilization runs from fast layers like Fashion and Commerce down to slower layers like Governance, Culture, and Nature. The point is not just that some things move faster than others; it is that healthy systems need both speeds. Fast layers learn, test, and absorb shocks. Slow layers remember, constrain, and give the system continuity. For AI and marketing work, the frame is useful because most visible change happens in the fastest layers: model citations, prompt behavior, ranking volatility, and tactical experiments. But durable strategy lives in slower layers: customer needs, reputation, owned data, content infrastructure, organizational routines, and the training data that shapes what models believe over time. Pace Layers helps separate what should be experimented with quickly from what should compound slowly. The fast layers are for learning. The slow layers are where power and resilience live.
